When it comes to estimating ideal weight there are several factors that must be taken into account, among them age, sex, body structure, bone density, proportion of muscle to fat, height and general health. During the last decades the Body Mass Index (BMI) has been the most widely used method to determine someone’s ideal body weight.
According to the United States Department of Health, the BMI is the measure of your body fat in relation to your height and total weight.
How to Determine Body Mass Index
To calculate your BMI, follow these steps:
- Multiply your actual weight in pounds by 703.
- Divide the result by your height in inches.
- Divide that total again by your height in inches.
For example, a woman who weighs 270 pounds and is 68 inches tall has a body mass index of 41.0.
