It wouldn’t be a bad idea to start having “the conversation” as soon as possible, but always taking into account that your words should be in accordance with the age of the child or adolescent.
A survey conducted in October 2016 by the National Campaign to Prevent Teenage and Unplanned Pregnancies found that between the ages of 12 and 15 years, parents influence 52% of their children’s decisions about sex. Among Hispanics, in the ages of 12 to 19 years old, the percentage was 50%.
The same survey indicated that in the 16 to 19 years old bracket, the percentage dropped to 32%. Clearly, the influence of parents decreases as the young grow older.
