Since gender identity has not been regularly included in youth health surveys up until recently, the CDC does not yet have enough data to assess trans youth suicide risk. Among the LGB youth, health data demonstrates a higher risk for negative health and life outcomes when compared to heterosexual youth. The LGB community also experiences a higher incidence of bullying, sexual assault, and domestic violence than the heterosexual community.
A large study published this September in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is one of the first studies to expand health professionals’ understanding of the LGBTQ community by exploring trans youth suicide risk. The study included survey data from between 2013 and 2015 from over California 900,000 youth attending high school.
